Day 9 – Doing A Great Work

Day 9 – Doing A Great Work

(Nehemiah 6:1-15)

Nehemiah’s journey to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem offers a compelling lesson on perseverance and focus. Despite making steady progress, Nehemiah faced mounting opposition from adversaries who became increasingly frustrated as their schemes failed. In an attempt to derail his efforts, they invited him to a meeting under the guise of discussing a supposed rebellion against the king. Nehemiah, discerning their true intent to distract and deceive, responded resolutely: “I am doing a great work so that I cannot come down…” (v.3). Even when a false prophet tried to instil fear and confusion, Nehemiah saw through the deception and remained unwavering in his commitment.

This account teaches us that once you have discovered your God-given purpose and resolved to fulfil it, you must expect opposition. Distractions and obstacles—whether blatant or subtle—will inevitably arise, aiming to divert your attention and sap your strength. These may come from open critics or, at times, from well-meaning individuals whose advice leads you away from your true assignment. The essential task, therefore, is to remain vigilant, discerning, and steadfast. Recognise that not every opportunity or demand is worth your time; some are specifically designed to derail your progress.

Nehemiah’s unwavering focus enabled him to complete the wall in just 52 days (v.15). He regarded his assignment as a “great work”—one that merited his best efforts, undivided attention, and all his energy. Likewise, we must see our unique calling as paramount, refusing to “come down” from it for anything or anyone until the task is accomplished. Whether your assignment is clear or you are still seeking direction, treat it as your greatest work. Prioritise it above distractions and remain resolute until it is fully realised.

Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God’ (Luke 9:62).
