Day 6 – Are You Ready?
(Luke 12:35-40)
The second coming
Usually whenever you hear the question “are you ready?”, it relates to a scheduled specific event. The date and time are fixed and the preparations you were supposed to do are clear. It could be an exam, a test, a game, or even a wedding.
In each of these events, the date and time is fixed, and the preparations required of you is clear. But when it comes to the second coming of Jesus Christ, it may become vague. Simply because the date and time is uncertain and the preparations, we need to do are not obvious.
This makes the concept of being ready for the coming of the Lord very vague at times. But we must nevertheless not ignore it. As Jesus himself spent a lot of time speaking about his second coming as is the case in today’s passage.
God is delaying His return
The second coming of Jesus Christ at an unexpected time is not a trap or trick designed by God to catch us off guard. On the contrary, God is delaying His return to give people the opportunity to follow Him (2 Peter 3:8).
In the bible reading for today, Jesus gave two instructions to His disciples and would-be disciples on how to be ready for His second coming:
Be Dressed for Service:
It is practical wisdom to dress appropriately for the occasion you are going to. Every occasion requires a dress code. Being dressed for service calls us to a purposeful living daily.
Being ready for the second coming of Christ requires us to live daily for His purposes. Does your life have purpose and direction? Are your purposes Jesus’ purposes for your life?
To be ready for Christ’s coming, make sure your life has a purpose. Make sure that the purpose is the master’s purpose for advancing God’s kingdom.
Keep Your Lamps Burning:
We need lamps to see in darkness. This instruction suggests that we all have lamps in us. Or we are all lamps in the world around us (Matthew 5:14).
As lights of the world, we are to brighten the world around us while we wait for the light of God’s kingdom to light up the world permanently at Christ’s second coming.
Keeping your lamps burning means that you live out your beliefs faithfully. It also means that you reflect Christ’s love as you relate to others in sincerity.
“You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect“
Luke 12:40
Thank you Jesus for your word. I can be ready because of your word and the help of the Holy Spirit. Amen
Amen!!
