(Matthew 6:19-21)
Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:19–21 confront one of the most subtle traps of the human heart: misplaced investment. He says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” These verses are not an attack on possessions themselves, but a revelation of priorities. Jesus is teaching us how to invest our lives wisely.

Earthly treasures are temporary and fragile. Wealth can disappear, status can fade, and achievements can be forgotten. When our sense of security and identity is anchored in what we own or accomplish, we build on unstable ground. Wise investments recognise the limits of this world. Jesus invites us to lift our eyes beyond the visible and invest in what cannot be destroyed. Heavenly treasures are formed through obedience, generosity, faithfulness, and love. Every act done to honour God—serving others, giving sacrificially, walking in integrity, pursuing holiness—becomes an eternal deposit. These investments may not always bring immediate applause or visible reward, but they carry lasting value in God’s kingdom. What we give to God is never lost; it is transferred.
Jesus also reveals a powerful truth: our hearts follow our treasures. What we consistently invest our time, energy, and resources in will eventually shape our desires and affections. If we invest only in earthly things, our hearts become bound to the earth. But when we invest in God’s purposes, our hearts are lifted toward heaven. Wise investment is therefore not just about future reward, but present transformation.
This devotional challenges us to examine our portfolios. Where are we spending our best time? What receives our strongest passion? How do we steward our finances, gifts, and influence? Wise investors live with eternity in view. They make daily choices that reflect eternal values. Today, ask the Holy Spirit to realign your heart. Choose investments that outlive you. Store up treasures in heaven by trusting God, loving people, and advancing His kingdom. In doing so, you will discover true security, lasting joy, and a heart fully anchored in what matters most.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Mt. 6:21).
