(John 12:20 – 26)

In John 12:20–26, Jesus presents a paradox that challenges human logic: “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.” With these words, Jesus reveals a foundational principle of the kingdom of God—true life is found only through death to self.
Jesus speaks these words in the shadow of the cross. He knows His own death is approaching, and He understands that His sacrifice will release life to many. The grain of wheat represents both Christ and His followers. Just as a seed must be buried and broken to bring forth a harvest, our lives must be surrendered for God’s purposes to flourish through us. Holding tightly to self-preservation leads to isolation and fruitlessness but surrender leads to multiplication.
Dying to live means letting go of self-centred ambition, personal control, and the need for approval. Jesus says, “Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” This is not a call to self-hatred, but to a reordered love—choosing God’s will above personal comfort and earthly gain. When Christ is first, everything else finds its proper place.
Jesus also links dying to living with discipleship and service: “Whoever serves me must follow me.” Following Jesus is not merely believing in Him but walking the path He walked—the path of obedience, humility, and sacrificial love. The promise is profound: “Where I am, my servant also will be.” Death to self draws us into deeper fellowship with Christ and eternal honour from the Father.
This devotional invites honest reflection. What must fall into the ground and die in your life? Is it pride, fear, unforgiveness, or a dream you refuse to release? Resurrection life always follows surrender. Today, choose the way of the seed. Lay your life in God’s hands. As you die to self, you will discover the miracle of truly living—bearing fruit that remains for eternity.
For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it (Mt. 16:25)
