(Amos 7:10-17)
In Amos 7:10–17, we see a striking example of faithfulness amidst opposition. Amaziah, the priest at Bethel’s shrine, plotted against Amos by sending false reports to King Jeroboam, seeking to portray the prophet as a threat to the kingdom. Outwardly, Amaziah feigned concern for Amos, urging him to flee to Judah where he could supposedly live more comfortably and speak freely. Yet, his real intention was to silence Amos and remove God’s message from Israel. This episode highlights how adversaries often disguise themselves with apparent kindness or make subtle suggestions to distract us from our calling.

Throughout history, the word of God has faced resistance. The enemy persistently seeks to hinder God’s purposes, sometimes by direct confrontation, at other times through carefully crafted temptations or compromise. Such obstacles may appear as criticism, misrepresentation, or even offers of an easier path. It is therefore vital to discern the tactics of opposition and remain firm in our commitment to God’s purpose for our lives.
Amos’s response is instructive. He reminded Amaziah that he was not a prophet by profession, but a farmer whom God called for a specific mission to Israel. Amos stood his ground, refusing to abandon his calling for comfort, approval, or the promise of greener pastures elsewhere. He understood that God’s assignments are specific—He calls us to particular people and places for His purposes. Faithfulness demands clarity about our assignment and the courage to resist diversions, no matter how attractive they may seem.
To fulfil your ministry or God-given calling, you must be convinced of your purpose, vigilant against deception, and steadfast in adversity. Resist the temptation to pursue comfort over obedience. God, who calls, is faithful to provide and protect. Lasting fulfilment and provision are found not in seeking an easier life, but in remaining faithful to the place and purpose to which God has assigned you. Faithfulness is the key to fruitfulness and true satisfaction in your calling.
And say to Archippus, “Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfil it” (Colossians 4:17).
