The Mayor of Broxbourne, Councillor Paul Seeby, has welcomed the arrival of a new church in Cheshunt, saying he is excited about its plans to serve and embrace the local community.

More than 200 supporters and well-wishers packed into the hall at Goffs-Churchgate Academy, College Road, Cheshunt, on Sunday (2 October) for the official launch ceremony of The Peniel Centre.

Cllr Seeby told them: “It’s fantastic to see so many smiling and welcoming faces of all ages and I was very excited to hear about your plans to serve and embrace the local community. I have no doubt that we will be hearing a lot more of your church in the coming days, months and years.”

As he cut the ribbon, he welcomed them to the borough of Broxbourne and declared the new church officially open.

The service was led by one of the new leaders, Leo Powell, who described The Peniel Centre as “an outward-focussed church that would reach out as much it could to the local community.

“This is a place for all – young and old – and a church that helps the needy and poor,” he stated, adding that children and youth groups would be starting on Sunday 9 October.

Bishop Edemekong Ekong, a missionary and Bible teacher, said it was a great occasion to see so many people coming together to celebrate the official opening of The Peniel Centre and said “a new light has appeared” before praying for the leaders.

The Peniel Centre’s founding pastor, Chris Ebechidi, and his wife, Flora, cut a celebration cake before thanking everyone for their support and hard work.

During his sermon, Pastor Chris stressed it was early days for The Peniel Centre and explained its background and how it came into being.

“Peniel means the ‘face of God’ – a bit like having FaceTime with God! So if you want that, come to The Peniel Centre. It is a place for lives to be touched and changed. No matter how young or old you are, or your situation, there is no brokenness that God cannot fix.

A number of other clergies attended to lend their support including Pastor Bethany Green from nearby Rosedale Community Church.

“We are delighted to welcome Pastor Chris and The Peniel Centre to Cheshunt. It’s wonderful to have other congregations ministering in the area and we are looking forward to working together to demonstrate God’s love in the community,” she said.

The lively service including singing and dancing and was followed by lunch prepared by members of The Peniel Centre for everyone who came along.

The Peniel Centre meets weekly at Goffs-Churchgate Academy:
